Brambleberry sat atop the Maple Hill, looking out upon StormClan, her Clan's, territory. The sun was just beginning to rise, and the medicine cat apprentice had snuck out just before dawn. Her mentor, the StormClan medicine cat, would be looking for her, but the former warrior she-cat had never seen such a beautiful sunrise. Actually, she had never seen the sun rise with this great a view at all. She was usually cooped up in camp, or on patrols and hunting; but now that she was training to be a medicine cat, Brambleberry had a lot more time to herself. The she-cat licked a paw and drew it slowly over her white and black head. Being a medicine cat apprentice was what she always wanted to be; fighitng, but not the claws and teeth of enemy Clans, but invisible illnesses. Brambleberry would help StormClan in her own special way, and hopefully, help them to survive tough winters and dry summers. Her eyes clouded as she looked into the future, and said aloud, "I'll be a great medicine cat... someday."

Scarclaw silently pawed up the hill. His steps were as if on clouds, until he reached the top, where crumpled leaves from last leaf fall wasted away. His paws crunched into them, but he didn't mind. He padded over to Brambleberry, mewing in greeting. "Hello, Brambleberry." He blinked, and when he opened his eyes, they were pleased. "Lovely morning, Eh?" his words hung on the steady breeze. His wounded paw patted down some grass and leaves, and he sat down. He strained his ears, not with hope. Just in case any other cats were approaching. He knew his loud steps on the leaves would have scared any prey far off. He rested his rump on the small bedding of old moist leaves and grass a fox-length away. His tail curled over his paws neatly, and his eyes glancing over the territory. He blinked for a long time, then opened his eyes again. The olive green in them shone in the sunrise. He drank in the humid morning air, and held his head high. "You're the new medicine cat apprentice, correct?" His eyes glanced at her, then back to the scenery.

Brambleberry flicked a spotted ear, "Yes. I was a warrior... but I think medicine cat fits me more." She meowed, flicking her black and white tail. The medicine cat apprentice noticed how Scarclaw gingerly set down his paw; concerned, she asked, "Is your paw ok? Do you want me to take a look at it?"

Scarclaw jerked his head to look at her. "Nah, 's been like that for ages now. It's alright." He stood up, padding softly over to her. He pressed his warm muzzle into her flank comfortingly. "You'll make a wonderful Medicine Cat!" He began to circle the large maple tree. Finally, he spotted something, and leaped onto the tree, his sharp claws digging into the bark. Swiftly and quietly, he clawed his way onto a high branch. Tasting the warm air, he crouched, and slowly edged to an X where two branches formed a nice resting spot. He cautiously pawed it, then lay down comfortably on it. His claws dug in to keep his balance. He watched the higher branches closely, for any sign of a bird or squirrel.

Brambleberry nodded, purring. "Thanks, Scarclaw." She meowed to him gratefully, flicking his nose with her tail.
Her eyes followed her friend as he clawed his way up the tree. Wondering if he had seen any prey, she whispered, "Any fresh-kill awaiting you up there?"

Scarclaw crouched and stared downward behind the tree. "I can't be sure if that's fresh-kill or just wind." His claws pricked the bark, and her tensed. "Its a robin." His voice quieted, his body clenched together, and gave a great leap down onto the hidden branch, and a series of loud noises followed. Chirping, screeching, and finally a thump. His huge paws spread as he landed, and he carried the plump bird over to her. "There's usually no birds after you make such a rucus. Guess this one was stupid." He shook his head quickly, and placed his kill at his paws. "Would you like to hunt a little for the Medicine cat and elders?"

Brambleberry's eyes sparkled. "I'd love to! I haven't been hunting in ages!" Her tail flicked back and forth as she padded down the Maple Hill. Looking back at where Scarclaw stood with the robin, she meowed, "C'mon, let's go, slow snail!"

Scarclaw grunted happily, bounding after her. He quickly slowed down, drinking in the scents of the drowsy morning forest, the early risers scuffling in the bushes. His eyes darted from side to side as he stealthily crouched down, looking for an easy catch. He pressed his claws into the moist earth, dew evaporating from the long grass. He bulged his muscles, his eyes turned into green slits of determination, fixed on a mouse eating something in the bushes. He paused for a moment, padding closer to the bush. The wind pressed him back, flowing over the hill, his scent undetected by the mouse. He stepped once more, then gave a great leap, thrusting off into the air, his enormous paws spread, claws unsheathed. He dissapeared for a moment behind the bush, then a hiss, a rustle, and a cat emerging from the bushes. He spat the mouse outside the bush, and quickly went back in for something else. Once more, Scarclaw emerged carrying something. This time there were two of them, fuzzy little mice. They looked about a moon old. He tossed them where their mother lay, and began digging. "They must've been late. They're small for baby mice in Green-Leaf." As he spoke, he began tumbling the mice into the hole, his huge injured paw batting them in.

Brambleberry nodded, her eyes twinkling. "Great catch, Scarclaw. But learn from the master." She joked, spotting a squirrel up a tree.
The white and black medicine cat apprentice began to scale a tree just as Scarclaw had, moments before his mice kill. Her hooked claws dug into the fresh bark. Getting up to the limb, she began to crawl out onto it, where the squirrel nibble unknowingly on an ancient acorn. Without hesitation, Brambleberry lunged. She caught the squirrel between her paws, and as the branch broke, she killed it with a bite to the neck. When it fell, she was right on top of it; stepping off, she acted like it had been a routine track-mouse-kill. Dropping the squirrel in front of her friend, she asked, "How's that for hunting?" Nudging him playfully on the shoulder.

Scarclaw laughed hartily. "Hrmph. Let's find me a squirrel, I'll show you how I would do it." He bounded off, looking everywhere.
Scarclaw stopped infront of a small oak, circling it as he had before. Finding a nice, thick-branched spot, he leaped up onto the first, the second, then the third. On the last jump, he hardly made a sound or a heavy movement. He landed gently with his claw digging in to make less noise. He crouched down, a small red squirrel chattering down at Brambleberry. He quietly scratched to the end of the branch, knocking the squirrel with huge paws, smacking it unconcious off the branch. He leaped down, two branches at a time. He quickly leaped off the last branch just missing Brambleberry. He quickly bit down into the twitching rodent. He pranced around with it in his mouth, then dropped it with her squirrel. "See? You don't fall when you knock it on the ground." He grins, shaking his fur, almost looking like a huge cat.

Brambleberry sighed, "Alright, alright, so I was cut out to hunt herbs not squirrels. But that was pretty good for, huh?" She admitted in her paw-wrapping way.

Scarclaw chuckled hartily again. "Alright. Want me to help you find herbs once we bring back these kills?" He shook himself again, then picked up his squirrel and dug up his other kills. "I can take my squirrel and the babies. Could you take the other mouse for me?" He forced the squirrel to clench back as far as possible in his jaws, then picked up the two baby mice by the tail. "Mmrf."

Brambleberry nodded, "Sure, I'll take these to the elders, give the apprentices a bit of a break today," She meowed, her amber eyes glinting, "And that'd be great, thanks!" She exclaimed, picking up the mouse and her squirrel by the bushy tail. Following Scarclaw back to camp, his and her kill hanging in her jaws.

Scarclaw padded back out of the camp, licking his chops. "When we get back we'll have our own little meal." He began sniffing the earth, and padding around the territory. At once he stopped, pressing his muzzle into a new poppy. "Brambleberry! Poppies!" He lifted his head, nodding toward the little patch. He pressed his muzzle back into the red flower, shaking many of the seeds out onto his paws. Quickly grabbing a huge rubarb leaf from the plant growing nearby, he nudged them all onto the leaf, then carefully dragged it to the next flower. "This'll be a great spot for finding poppy seeds."

Brambleberry bounded after him. "Great! Thanks Scarclaw, this is one less herb I have to help restock!" She began pawing seeds off onto the leaf, happy she had managed to do some medicine cat stuff today.
